Steve Clark from Hospital Aids gave a discussion around innovation. He asked us as instructors to contact manufacturers if you feel that the product doesn’t meet specification or if you feel that a certain problem cannot be met. On that note, if you cannot find a product that deals with a specific problem give us a call at TLC and we may know of something that already exists. Failing that we can approach manufacturers on your behalf.
Sonja Conway from Walkeze gave a demonstration and discussion based around turning solutions. She demonstrated the WendyLett system as well as showed an innovative use of a hoist to turn a client in bed.
As mentioned earlier, Jacqui Hall, of Northumbria University and one of the authors of the Guide to the Handling of People gave a discussion based around the need to understand the correct publications to use as an instructor, as well as the pitfalls of using certain publications. I had only gave her the title of the session which was “Get to know publications”. She exceeded my expectations by going into how to write for publication etc. On top of this at the last minute (literally the same day) I asked her to cover the session “How to do research”. She coped with the added burden admirably.
As far as the directors of TLC were concerned. Dorothy said that she felt a little bit out of her depth with regards to being placed as the MC. I was in trouble for giving her that job. However, she coped with it no problem and said that she will know what it is all about if she has to ever do it again. She found no problem with the final session on “Professional development”.
